The Matador Retreat
From Wounded to Warrior: An Immersive Gathering for Men
Initiation. Identity. Purpose. Practice.
Some work cannot be done in short sessions or weekly rhythms.
It requires space, presence, and sustained attention.
The Matador Retreat is an immersive, in-person experience for men who have already begun the work and are ready to slow down and go deeper.
This is not an escape.
It is a continuation.
Step Out of the Noise. Step Into the Work.
Weekly gatherings (60–75 minutes) | Group discussion & reflection
Exercises you can take into your week | A chance to slow down, connect, and listen to your life
No pressure. No performance. Just presence.
Why This Retreat Exists
Many men carry insight but rarely have the space to stay with it.
Daily life pulls attention outward. Patterns return—practice waynes.
The Matador Retreat exists to create a clear container where men can:
-
Step out of routine
-
Be present with their own story
-
Work alongside other men without performance
-
Re-engage the core work with depth and honesty
This retreat is not about intensity.
It is about staying.
"Set on the historic Matador Ranch, this retreat places you in the rugged beauty of the Texas Panhandle. Wide skies, rolling prairie, and quiet nights create the backdrop for inner work that few men ever make time to do..."

Men engage in:
-
Structured group work

What to Know Before You Consider the Retreat
The Matador Retreat is intentionally structured and deliberately paced.
These details are shared here so nothing is hidden and nothing is rushed.
When and Where
The Matador Retreat takes place in the Matador, Texas.
The next retreat is planned for April.
Details about the location and logistics are shared directly with men who are registered, in order to protect the container and the integrity of the work.
How Men Arrive
Most men who attend the Matador Retreat have already engaged the work through Book Studies or small groups.
This retreat is not an entry point. It is designed for men who have begun the work and are ready to deepen it in a more immersive setting.
What Comes After
There is no required outcome or prescribed next step.
Some men return to their existing practices with renewed clarity. Others continue in community or small groups. The retreat does not complete the work — it re-anchors it.
The Guide's Role
The Matador Retreat is guided by John Moore, founder of The Rugged Journey.
John’s role is to hold a clear, grounded container for the work. Men are not managed, pushed, or led ahead of themselves. The work unfolds through presence, responsibility, and consent.
